In this guide I am going to teach you how to create gradients in Canva. Mastering gradients is an important skill as they give you one more tool in your design tool bag that can help you enhance your designs.
Gradients are a powerful tool in the world of design, offering a way to add depth, interest, and emotion to your creations. Good news, Canva has recently improved its capabilities with a dedicated gradient feature. Below, I’ll walk you through how to use this new feature to elevate your designs. Let’s get started with a step-by-step guide!
How to Create Gradients in Canva, a Step-by-Step Guide
1. Accessing the Gradient Tool:
To access the gradient tool in Canva, start by selecting a shape. The gradient option is cleverly integrated with the shapes tool in Canva. This integration allows for a seamless transition from solid to gradient fills.
2. Creating a Shape:
Press ‘R’ on your keyboard to bring up a rectangle, or choose from other shapes under the ‘Elements’ tab. Shapes serve as the canvas for your gradient.
3. Applying the Gradient:
Once your shape is ready, click on the color option. Here, instead of choosing a solid color, select the gradient option. This opens up a world of possibilities with gradient colors.
4. Customizing Your Gradient:
Customize your gradient by selecting different colors. Canva starts with a default two-color gradient. You can adjust these colors and their transition, choosing between linear or radial gradients and deciding the direction of the color flow.
5. Adding Multiple Colors:
Add more colors to your gradient for a more complex and vibrant design. This feature allows you to introduce additional shades into your gradient, creating a unique and eye-catching effect.
6. Adding Transparency:
A key feature of Canva’s gradient tool is the ability to add transparency to colors. This allows for smooth transitions and can create a more sophisticated look.
7. Saving and Using the Gradient:
Once you’re satisfied with your gradient, you can apply it to various design elements. There’s not a specific way to “save” a gradient, but it will show under the color palette options from within the design where it was created and you can apply that gradient to various shapes within that design. You can also use the copy style option and paste it to other elements within that design or even to elements in other designs.
Creative Uses of Gradients in Design
Gradients can enhance your design in a number of ways: They can help your design stand out, they can draw focus to a particular area of your design, the colors of the gradient can evoke a certain energy and feeling. Keep these things in mind when creating a gradient. Where are you trying to direct the readers eye? What emotion are you trying to elicit?

Flat to Fabulous
In Canva one of the most powerful ways you can use Canva is combined with imagery to help take the image from flat to fabulous. Sometimes images can be on a dull background and they can look kind of flat and boring, but if you extract the subject using Canva’s Background Remover and then apply a few gradients then suddenly you can add dimension and make the image pop!

Improvements Still Needed
While Canva’s gradient options have improved — you didn’t used to be able to create custom gradients! — there are still definitely improvements that can be made.
First, if you’ve ever used the gradients editor in Photoshop you’ve probably noted it’s just better. It has super easy sliders that let you adjust your gradient in on-the-fly and see all the changes occur in real time, with sliders for when you gradients starts, ends, and to control how abrupt or gradual all the color transitions are. Hopefully, Canva will improve their gradient tool in the future with some of these helpful options you see in other software.
The second big item that I feel is lacking in Canva is the inability to add gradients to text. Sure, there are some hack by which you could get in done, but not without giving up an efficient workflow. Hopefully Canva will add gradient text, or better yet masking which would also give you the ability to add a gradient to text.
Despite these shortcomings, the new Canva gradient options are a step forward and give hope for even more improvement in the future so make sure you understand how to create gradients in Canva and take advantage of gradients a means for enhancing your designs!
How are you using Gradients?
The gradient tool in Canva opens up a myriad of design possibilities. Experiment with different shapes, colors, and transparency levels to discover the full potential of gradients in your designs.
I’d love to see how you use gradients in your Canva designs! Feel free to share a link to one of your designs in the comments below and maybe we can all draw some inspiration from one another. Happy designing!
